I wanted to like Nithyananda when I met one of his closer devotees, a very astute physician who was a challenging and well-informed debating opponent. This person has since left Nithyananda's org, along with a number of other close devotees, all around the same time. The reason my friend gave was that Nithyananda was pushing for the big-time at the expense of spiritual and organizational truth. The miracle-mongering and marketing became more important than the message. In fact, they've become the message in toto, imo.

Based on comments on the blog, there appears to be a growing anti-Nithyananda presence online. If anyone has anything pro or con to say about him, please feel welcome to doing so in this category.

I like to know more about Nithyananda too. He has great videos on Youtube, he is a great speaker. I like to hear from those who has been with him closely, as well as those who had left.

I would also like to know more. He is becoming increasingly popular in Malaysia and the healers trained by him are effective. Up close he appears as loving and insightful. But who is he really? Any insights?

What makes me sick is that when I'm doing pradakshina of the mountain, my visuals are assaulted by pictures of The Nit, and notices in Tamil about how much money he's poured into beautifying the mountain -- what with plenty of copies of his picture? You can't sit down and enjoy a cuppa, turn to face the mountain slopes or even slink to the roadside for a discreet leak without his callow face grinning its way right up into your nostrils.

The wise will tell me (and rightly) I that one should enquire into whose tits are being tweaked here. Indeed, indeed!

Well every dog has its day, its rise, peak and demise, and I daresay it's no exception with our Nit.

kind regards,

Nithyananda (A guru who has nothing to do with enlightenment/spirituality)

With great disappointment and sadness I totally agree with Jodyr. Initially We also were mesmerised by his "Enlightenment?" talks and hypnotic speeches. I attained "Enlightenment" when I went to Himalayas to attend his camp an saw the true nature of this guru. I thank God for taking me there.

The whole theme is "Enlightenment" and "meditation. People who don't understand our rich spiritual path are the easy victims for this bait.

He does not feel ashamed to exploit each and every spiritual guru, Ramakrishna, Sai Baba, any body , does not spare even the Buddhist meditation techniques. All just to cover people of every guru/faith, he usurps the true bhakti of the other great gurus/steals their ideas and good name and just to make money and get a "Divine" position.

One piece of advice to the still mesmerised group of innocent victims, just go to the Himalayas and attend his camp - u see how spirituality is annulled to create the maya that this sucker is the "Spiritual Guru". That place would be the Bodhi tree and u will acttain your real ENLIGHTENMENT. Of course the place will be polluted with his sickening glamourous photos.

He exploits people's vacuum/vacillations by saying they need enlightenment; pleads just for one chance for him to get into ur mind and help u attain enlightenment. And there u go, u will be brainwashed, emotionally ad spiritually abused and end up losing urself/ur career/money.

Another piece of warning for parents, don't go with ur kids in the first place.Hinduism has many spiritual gurus and u don't ever introduce the innocent minds to this exploiter. U are sure to lose them to this mean man; they will end up in a dazed doped drug addict like state. (I am one such parent). Many people quit their career and go behind him (of course they eventually return after understanding the deceit). Can u imagine any of our gurus who could mislead children who trust them, usurp another guru's name,  and guarantee "ENLIGHTENMENT ???" if we could pay money/go behind him.

He is a shame for Hinduism ans all our renounced Gurus.

Money, money, money is all that matters (that too $, $, and $). He dares to command people (of course when u attend the camps)  for 10%  of gross income. He says "I have given u 30 days of my time, why don' t u give 3 days of ur time and volunteer here".

Seek enlightenment in our traditional hindu ways/teachings and don't fall a  prey for this glamour guru. If u lose money that could be made up, but don't get brainwashed and losr ur sef/children to this evil guru.

From a grieving parent.

If any one has any more information on Nithyananda: I would like to know. I have been a disciple, but concerned now of all the remarks I am reading. Is he really, what he projects himself to be???

To know if a master is really enlightened or not - go and sit in his presence.. Don't judge from here...

Sitting in someone's presence does not tell you if the person is enlightened or not. Only your opinion will tell you if he/she is enlightened.

Many sit in the presence of the same person and have different feelings, opinions, etc.

Don't delude yourself that your feelings or opinions are more correct than someone elses.

Why do you care if he is "enlightened" or not? You have few ways you can benefit from a siddha purusha. (1) You can be healed of diseases (useless if you want go beyond body/mind consciousness) (2) You can gain knowledge (Aparoksha jnana / Indirect Knowledge - which can be obtained from books) (3) You can gain energy (through Shaktipath from the guru, as an impetus to raise kundalini) (4) Through moral support (because he/she has better wisdom) (5) By gaining answers to your mundane problems (that are supposedly spiritually compatible), etc.

If you are really a dedicated person to achieve ultimate self-realization in this life, then you need a real guru. But who is a real guru? How do you find one? Will he/she accept you as a chela?

I read some books to find a reasonable test to find a guru who can really lead his disciple to realization (non-indirect knowledge). I found very few methods. I used one of the tests on Nithyananda when he visited North America in 2009. He failed, but could not give up. As a way to look graceful, he promised something that will happen. It did not happen either. If he did not promise, I would have still had some doubt that he may not be interested in proving himself to everybody who seeks. My understanding is that if a person is fully established in truth, his words will become true (based on Vibhuthi Pada of Patanjali Yoga Sutras). This did not happen. I don't need anymore proof than this to discard him. He seems to have enough power to do shaktipath, which people felt at Kalpataru Darshan, including myself. If you are looking for that, go to him.

Yes, If you can't feel his presence or feel connected, then he is not for you. Why do you want to know if he is enlightened or not?

Vaidy ... Why should a person go and sit and feel the guru's presence and feel connected? If he is "REALLY" enlightened ... he is omnipresent … there is no need to sit in front of his physical form.

As such, a close observation will easily reveal what they are up to really! More than feeling a Guru's presence... a person has to feel his EXISTENCE

Nithyananda is not who he claims to be.
He has great videos on youtube.  His talks can be mesmerizing and convincing.  He does exude energy - I have felt it strongly.  He is incredibly intelligent and knows how to say the right things to people.  I had fallen for him quite strongly after feeling his energy throughout my body with just his touch on my forehead.  I fell head over heels in love with him as much as someone could fall in love and devotion to a guru.  I found myself doing everything he was espousing.  I even legally changed my name, even my passport and driver's license, etc.  I ran at every chance to see him, to be near him.  I thought of him every minute of the day.  I prayed to him and held him above all else.
But, there were too many little inconsistencies that I noticed.  What he said in public and what he did in private were vastly different.  He does brainwash people - if we have any doubt in our minds about him or his movement, we are told to "drop the doubt, drop the mind" lest we never reach enlightenment because of our "own fault" in not have "dropped our minds."  He knows how to manipulate each person - he is master of the way people's psychology is, the way people think and believe, our psyche.  He doesn't allow his ashramites to sleep - they get anywhere from no sleep to a few hours a day.  He makes them work, work, work to the point of physical and mental exhaustion.  He only believes in propagating his name, and acquiring money - not true religion.  Religion is only a front just for outward appearance.  He actually disrepects Gods in private sessions saying bad derogatory comments about them.  I've seen him belittle and berate his ashramites shamelessly - it is emotional torture and humiliation.  He claims it is "for their own good" to help them "lose their ego" so that they become enlightened but this is just a bogus double-speak in order to ill treat them as he wishes.  He is a very sick, sick man who is egotistical, interested in fame and fortune, enjoys torturing people in a number of ways-mental, physical, emotional, and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.  He doesn't mind stepping on people's toes, nay their heads, in order to get ahead.  And everyone who is still in the movement are a bunch of stupid fools because they (most if not all) can see the signs but fail to acknowledge them and only believe his double-speak.  They choose to stay in ignorance because they have fallen for his total crap words.
I urge those still in the movement to look past his words, and don't just believe what you see him do in public.  He puts on a great humble and gracious act in public.  See his actions in more private and intimate settings - this is a very dangerous man.  Trust your gut instinct.  Don't drop your mind - it's the only thing that is showing you the red flags to alert you to danger.  Good luck to you and God Bless because now only the Real God can help you get out of this mess.  I am thankful to the Real God for helping to show me the way out and save my life and my soul.

Oh my goodness, I never thought I would read an experience which parallels my own so closely. To the above poster, I am pretty sure we have met. You have hit the nail squarely on the head.  I spent considerable time at the ashram myself. I didn't go quite as far as legally changing my name, but I know exactly what you mean about running to the ashram and thinking about Nithyananda constantly and obsessively, because we were so brainwashed. The contact high that Nithyananda gives creates addicts who chase him like a hit of heroin. I would spend countless hours just to disconnect myself from my responsibilities and to be in the so-called "energy field". I proselytized to friends and family and tried to convert them and do his programs.

Fortunately, like you, I saw the real light before it was too late and I got sucked completely into the organization. I think there are still some devotees/ashramites who might see through the deceit and get out and save the shambles of their lives. I don't care what the argument is for the purported benefits of continuing to stay inside, but large organizations with an aggressive drive to expand and to bring in more and more devotees and money can never lead a genuine seeker to the truth. A drug like high is never a substitute for the wisdom borne of solitude, silence and quiet contemplation.

I'd be happy to connect with you in private, if you would feel so inclined. You can trust that I am not planted by the organization (a fear that people who leave always have).

What is so confusing about Nithyananda's enchanting videos is that is a mix of truth and falsehood.
