They're big but are they interesting enough? And are they cult-like enough to qualify?

I'm thinking of the big-timey quasi-gurus of self-improvement, such as "personal growth expert Brandon Bays, Chief Trainer to uber-guru Anthony Robbins for many years, appearing on stage with the likes of Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer," who all appeared in the same Google hit.

Those guys stay off my radar because they aren't really claiming to be God, although they're making money like Him. If you've got anything to share about them, please do, O guru of the gurubusters.

Sarlo brought the subject of gurus to a point of scrutiny. Before Gururatings, there was just the anti-cult folk. Gurudom was not examined by those who subscribed to that culture of spirituality. Once Gururatings came online, there was a place and impetus to take a good look at what folks believe about gurus, and how gurus behave in general. It was a substantial development in American Vedic-based spiritual culture, imo.

Thanks for your kind words. My ventures into gurubusting have been small compared to yours but yes, previously the only place for questioning the merits of individual gurus was in the condemn-em-all anti-cult sites.

About the self-help near-gurus, the reasons you stated for their being off your radar make good sense, and there's the question of allocating your energies. They do have enormous influence though and their endorsements and associations with these guys are worth a lot.

Still, best to wait rather than chase after them and root through their garbage cans.

[Amusing aside: I just did a bit of searching and found Wayne Dyer on your David Hawkins page. Not only was he not supporting the Hawk, but the Google-supplied ad for the page was one FOR Hawkins. Ha ha!]

i certainly think these guys have a certain god-like aura without the muss and fuss of having to say they are god , which seems to be some kind of traditional hindu gambit, Here in the states in the" New Wage" community, to earn is divine. They invoke being at one with the universe and all that so, it's a fine line between God and Mammon. maybe they get the best of that world without the "I'm God" dilemma. It's more like god is on my side.
And there'sthe issue of authority without god , the expert of what ever sort that you must support in order too get IT. Some people are much more comfortable without the trappings of spirituality and god, glad to spend on Landmark, Wayne, Secret, the powerful buddhist leader etc. But the net effect could be the same.
